Scorching heat forces class suspensions across the Philippines

MANILA – A number of local governments across the country suspended in-person classes on Tuesday, April 2, in anticipation of extremely hot weather.

Based on the state weather bureau’s latest forecast, several areas across the country are expected to experience “danger category” heat indexes exceeding 42 degrees Celsius.

A heat index under “danger category” may cause heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke during continued exposure.

Alternative modes

Meanwhile, the Department of Education also earlier announced that some schools have already begun implementing alternative modes of learning in lieu of suspending in-person classes.

Below is a list of suspended face-to-face classes on Tuesday, April 2, 2024:

In Metro Manila: all day care centers to secondary level (public) in Quezon City.

In Western Visayas: preschool to senior high school in Bacolod City; all levels (both public and private) in EB Magalona, Negros Occidental; all preschool to senior high school (both public and private) in Talisay City, Negros Occidental; all levels (public and private) in Isabela, Negros Occidental; all levels (public and private) in Bago City, Negros Occidental; all levels (public and private) in Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental; all levels (public and private) in Silay City, Negros Occidental; and preschool to senior high school (both public and private) in Iloilo City.

In Mindanao: all afternoon classes in all levels (public and private) until April 15 in Tantangan, South Cotabato.
