VIENTIANE – Lao and Chinese police are working in partnership for managing the border between the two countries, especially the fight against various crimes.
Future cooperation was discussed at the 10th border management cooperation meeting between the Phongsaly Provincial Police Command of Laos and the Immigration and Exit Checkpoint for border protection and the Border Management Command of China, which was held in Phongsaly province recently.
The Lao side was led by the head of the Phongsaly Provincial Police Command, Major General Khamchan Senglavong.
During the meeting, both sides presented a summary of the situation, which the two sides have jointly reviewed in the past. They appreciated the results of the implementation of the decisions made at the 2022 meeting relating to joint law enforcement, border management and fighting transnational crime.
The two sides discussed ways to deepen law enforcement cooperation in the border areas of the two countries in future, such as cooperation in maintaining political peace and order in the border areas and combating various crimes.
Although the spread of Covid-19 created obstacles, difficulties, and challenges for cooperation between the two sides, they have overcome this with high responsibility and impressive performance and also raised cooperation to a higher level.
For future relations, both sides will simultaneously improve the entry-exit procedures to be neat, convenient, fast, efficient and orderly, set strict conditions for issuing passports, raise the quality of the issuance of books to prevent bad groups from forging passports or changing personal information and sneaking in and out of the city, and educate and create awareness among people along the border of the two sides widely and continuously. This will be done through a process based on actual border management work and the border situation so that the people themselves understand the situation and follow the laws and regulations of the two countries.
At the same time, the two sides will increase their efforts to prevent illegal entry and exit, improve the information exchange mechanism by using specialised personnel, and use the internet to collect information on the situation and find out the movement plan. They will also share internal and early warning information on criminals and carry out preventive patrols in the residential areas of villagers along the border and important hotspots to prevent illegal entry and exit.
During the meeting, both sides signed a memorandum of cooperation on border management for the 10th time between the Phongsaly Provincial Police Command of Laos and its Chinese counterpart.
