YANGON – The European Union (EU) announced on June 20 that it will provide an additional €15 million to help those who have fled their homes in the country and Myanmar refugees abroad due to the rise of armed conflicts in Myanmar.
The additional €15 million will provide urgently needed food, clean drinking water, emergency health aid and clear dangerous landmines for those who have fled their homes due to the armed conflict, said the EU.
Since the political change in Myanmar in 2021, the EU has been providing more support to Myanmar’s political crisis every year, and by 2024, the EU has set a quota of up to 36 million euros in support.
Before 2021, the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance was only one million, but after the political change, the number has increased to 18.6 million people, and the number of displaced people has also increased to more than three million, according to the EU statement.
The EU has been providing humanitarian aid to Myanmar since 1994, and in early 2024, it approved 19 million euros for humanitarian work in the country, as well as an additional two million euros to address the regional impact of the crisis, the EU statement said.
