SEOUL – Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour and Choi Moon-soon, governor of Hwacheon county in South Korea’s Ganwon-do province, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will provide increased opportunities for Cambodians to work in South Korea.
The March 15 signing ceremony took place at Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training in Phnom Penh.
Speaking at a meeting before the signing ceremony, Sour thanked the governor for accepting workers from Cambodia at this time.
He also requested that more be accepted by the private sector in Hwacheon county, under the type E7 skilled workers visa scheme.
As labour minister, he also asked that Moon-soon protect the well-being of the Cambodians who will work in his county.
Moon-soon thanked the minister for his cooperation, noting the long experience of the labour ministry in sending the Kingdom’s workers to South Korea, under the Employment Permit System (EPS).
According to the ministry, in order to ensure workers’ rights are protected, all contracts for work in Korea should be administered through the ministry.
“Cambodia and South Korea are committed to increasing cooperation in the fields of employment, vocational training and the protection of Cambodian workers. The Korean side will continue to provide job opportunities for Cambodian workers, as it deems them hard-working, honest and diligent,” said the ministry.
An increase in contracts followed a visit to South Korea by Sour earlier this month. While there, he met with Lee Jung-sik, Korea’s Minister of Employment and Labour, and Lee Cheol-woo, governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do province.
