Brunei court slaps a RM307,000 fine on Indonesian possessing and selling smuggled cigarettes

The customs prosecutor revealed in court that the defendant was found hoarding 120 cartons and 11 packets of cigarettes, along with over RM5000 worth of cash in his possession at a house in Kampong Delima Satu on October 3.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – The Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday has ordered an Indonesian man to settle a BND88,500 (RM307,00) fine for possessing a sizeable amount of smuggled cigarettes, and selling them.

Nandang Permana, 31, would have to serve 19 months’ jail in default of payment.

The customs prosecutor revealed in court that the defendant was found hoarding 120 cartons and 11 packets of cigarettes, along with BND579 worth of cash in his possession at a house in Kampong Delima Satu on October 3.

Customs preventive officers conducted the inspection at 4.10pm leading to the discovery of smuggled cigarettes and proceeds from their sales.
